Blufloc Polyacrylamide: From Granular Powder to High-Viscosity Solution
Understanding Polyacrylamide (PAM)
A deep dive into the science and advantages of our industry-leading water-soluble polymers.
What is Blufloc PAM?
Blufloc Polyacrylamide is a solid powder, highly efficient water-soluble polymer characterized by varying molecular weights and charge densities. It is synthesized through the polymerization of acrylamide monomers, resulting in long-chain macromolecules. These advanced molecular structures are primarily utilized to dramatically increase the viscosity of water, creating a thicker, more manageable solution, or to actively encourage the rapid flocculation of suspended particles present in various water matrices. This allows for the rapid settlement and easy removal of finely suspended solids, making it an indispensable chemical agent in modern industrial and municipal processes.

The Blufloc Series: Comprehensive PAM Solutions
Bluwat manufactures a complete spectrum of polyacrylamide products, meticulously categorized into Anionic, Cationic, and Nonionic types to address the specific charge requirements of different industrial effluents and process waters.
Anionic PAM (APAM)
Anionic polyacrylamide carries a negative electrical charge. It is highly effective in treating wastewater that contains positively charged suspended particles or in neutral to alkaline environments. With a molecular weight ranging from 5 to 25 million and an anionic degree of 5-100%, APAM is the go-to solution for heavy industries.
Primary Uses: Mining tailings thickening, coal washing, steel mill wastewater, and enhanced oil recovery (EOR). The long polymer chains bridge between particles, creating massive, fast-settling flocs.
Cationic PAM (CPAM)
Cationic polyacrylamide features a positive charge density, making it exceptionally efficient for treating organic-rich wastewater and sludge that typically carries a negative charge. It boasts a molecular weight of 5 to 12 million and a cationic degree of 5-80%.
Primary Uses: Municipal sewage treatment, sludge thickening and dewatering (centrifuges, belt presses), paper making (as a retention and drainage aid), and food processing wastewater. It provides superior solid-liquid separation and highly compact sludge cakes.
Nonionic PAM (NPAM)
Nonionic polyacrylamide has a very low ionic charge (0-5%) and relies primarily on its high molecular weight (5 to 12 million) and the adsorption properties of its amide groups to bridge particles. It is highly versatile and performs well in highly acidic environments where ionic PAMs might fail.
Primary Uses: Mineral processing in acidic conditions, soil stabilization, textile industry wastewater, and as an auxiliary agent in various chemical formulations where charge neutrality is essential.

Solution Making & Selection Guide
Proper preparation and selection of polyacrylamide are paramount to achieving optimal performance. Follow our expert guidelines to maximize the efficiency of your water treatment operations.
How to Make the Perfect PAM Solution
- Dissolving Concentration: The powder should be standardly dissolved to a 0.1% - 0.5% concentration. Higher concentrations will result in excessive viscosity, making pumping difficult.
- Dissolving Time: The time required to dissolve the PAM varies according to the specific type, water quality, temperature, and agitation speed. However, it generally requires around 1 hour of continuous agitation to completely dissolve the powder. Incomplete mixture of PAM or lumping (fish-eyes) may severely inhibit the performance of the polymer.
- Agitation Speed: The ideal revolution of the agitator is between 200 - 400 rpm. A high-speed agitator operating without reducing the revolution of a motor is strongly not advised, since the high shear forces may cut and destroy the long molecular chains of the PAM. An ideal agitator motor should be of 1HP for a 1-2m³ mixing tank.
Selection Guide: Choosing the Right PAM
Selecting the correct type of Blufloc PAM depends heavily on the characteristics of the target liquid:
- Analyze the Charge: If the suspended particles in your wastewater are positively charged (common in inorganic wastewater like sand washing or mining), select Anionic PAM. If they are negatively charged (common in organic municipal sewage or food processing), select Cationic PAM.
- Check the pH Value: Anionic PAM performs best in neutral to highly alkaline conditions (pH 7-14). Cationic PAM is ideal for acidic to neutral conditions. If the environment is highly acidic, Nonionic PAM is often the most stable choice.
- Determine Molecular Weight needs: Higher molecular weights create larger, faster-settling flocs but result in higher viscosity solutions. Lower molecular weights are better for tight filtration or specific dispersion needs.
- Laboratory Jar Testing: We always recommend conducting a simple jar test on-site using different Blufloc samples to determine the exact product and the most economical dosage for your specific application.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Why is Bluwat considered the leading manufacturer of polyacrylamide?
With over 25 years of dedicated manufacturing experience, Bluwat possesses state-of-the-art production facilities, a rigorous quality control system, and a deep understanding of polymer chemistry. We don't just sell chemicals; we provide comprehensive water treatment solutions. Our global reach, exporting to over 100 countries, is a testament to the trust industries place in the stability and performance of our Blufloc series.
How does Polyacrylamide differ from traditional coagulants like Alum?
Traditional coagulants like aluminum sulfate (alum) or ferric chloride work by neutralizing charges, but they require massive dosages and generate enormous amounts of chemical sludge. Polyacrylamide is a high-molecular-weight flocculant that physically bridges neutralized particles together into massive flocs. It requires a fraction of the dosage, works much faster, and dramatically reduces the volume of sludge produced, saving significant disposal costs.
What happens if the agitation speed is too high during preparation?
Polyacrylamide works effectively because of its incredibly long molecular chains. If the agitation speed exceeds the recommended 200-400 rpm, the high mechanical shear forces will literally tear and break these molecular chains (polymer degradation). This drastically reduces the viscosity of the solution and destroys its ability to bridge particles, rendering the chemical largely ineffective.
Can Blufloc PAM be used for drinking water treatment?
Yes, specific grades of our polyacrylamide are formulated to meet stringent safety standards for municipal raw water treatment and clarification. It is crucial to inform our technical team that the application is for potable water so we can supply the appropriate food/drinking-water grade product that strictly controls residual monomer levels to well below the 0.05% safety threshold.
How should I store the PAM powder to ensure its 2-year shelf life?
The powder must be kept in its original, tightly sealed packaging (kraft paper or PE bags with inner plastic liners). It should be stored in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated warehouse. It is critical to keep the product away from moisture, as it is highly hygroscopic and will clump if exposed to humidity. Furthermore, it must be protected from direct sunlight and extreme heat.
Do you provide samples and technical support for international clients?
Absolutely. As a global exporter serving over 100 countries, we understand that every wastewater profile is unique. We provide free samples for laboratory jar testing and offer comprehensive remote or on-site technical support from our team of chemical engineers to help you select the precise Blufloc model and optimize your dosing strategy.
