Chemical Wastewater Color Removal for a Leather Chemical Manufacturer in Turkey
Chemical Wastewater Color Removal for a Leather Chemical Manufacturer in Turkey
Industry Challenge
The leather processing and leather chemical industry generates large volumes of wastewater containing dyes, tanning chemicals, surfactants, and organic compounds.
In Turkey, where the leather industry plays an important role in the export economy, many manufacturers face strict environmental discharge regulations for wastewater color and COD levels.
A leather chemical manufacturer located in western Turkey contacted Bluwat Chemicals after experiencing difficulties removing color from its chemical wastewater using conventional coagulation methods.
The wastewater contained high levels of dye residues and complex organic compounds, resulting in persistent color even after treatment.
Wastewater Characteristics
Laboratory analysis showed that the wastewater had the following characteristics:
- High color intensity from dye additives
- High COD concentration
- Stable colloidal particles
- Poor natural sedimentation performance
- Difficult color removal using PAC alone
These characteristics required a combined decolorization and flocculation treatment approAch.
Bluwat Jar Test Evaluation
To determine the optimal treatment process, Bluwat engineers conducted a laboratory jar test using wastewater samples provided by the customer.
The recommended treatment process consisted of three steps.
Step 1 – Decolorization
A Bluwat Water Decolorizing Agent was first added to break down dye molecules and neutralize color-causing compounds.
This step significantly reduced the intensity of the wastewater color.

Step 2 – Coagulation
Next, Polyaluminium Chloride (PAC) was introduced to destabilize colloidal particles and initiate coagulation.
PAC helps bind fine suspended particles and organic matter.

Step 3 – Flocculation
Finally, a small amount of Polyacrylamide (PAM)Flocculant was added.
PAM promotes the formation of large flocs, allowing particles and color compounds to settle quickly.

Treatment Performance
After treatment, the wastewater showed significant improvement in both color and clarity.

| Parameter | Before Treatment | After Treatment |
|---|---|---|
| Color (Pt-Co) | 2500 | <120 |
| COD (mg/L) | 2200 | 800 |
| Suspended Solids | High | Low |
| Visual Appearance | Dark yellow-brown | Light yellow and clear |
Large flocs formed rapidly during the test, and sedimentation occurred within a short time.
The results confirmed that the Decolorizing Agent + PAC + PAM combination is highly effective for treating leather chemical wastewater.
Benefits for Leather Chemical Manufacturers
This treatment approAch offers several advantages for leather chemical and tanning-related industries:
- Efficient color removal
- Improved flocculation performance
- Faster solid-liquid separation
- Reduced chemical consumption in downstream treatment
- Enhanced preparation for biological treatment systems
Application Industries
The same treatment strategy can also be applied to wastewater generated from:
- Leather chemical manufacturing
- Tanning industry wastewater
- Dye and pigment production
- Textile dyeing plants
- Chemical additive manufacturing
